Domains + DNS Help

How to change your domain nameservers.

Nameservers decide where your domain's DNS is managed. If your domain is registered with Hostmate, you can change its nameservers through the Hostmate Client Area. If the domain is registered elsewhere, change the nameservers with that registrar when you want Hostmate cPanel to manage the domain's DNS.

Hostmate Nameservers

Use these nameservers for Hostmate cPanel hosting and DNS.

If you want Hostmate cPanel to manage DNS for the domain, set the domain to:

Nameserver 1ns1.hostmate-cloud.com
Nameserver 2ns2.hostmate-cloud.com
Nameserver 3ns3.hostmate-cloud.com
Add the domain to cPanel first.

If this is an additional domain on your hosting account, add it to cPanel before changing nameservers so the Hostmate DNS zone and hosting configuration are ready.

Domain Registered with Hostmate

Open the domain in the Hostmate Client Area.

Log in to the Hostmate Client Area, open List Domains, then select the domain you want to manage.

Open the domain's Nameservers management option.

Domains registered with Hostmate can have their nameservers updated from the domain management page.
3

Update Nameservers

Enter the new nameservers and save the change.

Replace the current nameservers with the nameservers you want the domain to use.

If the domain should use Hostmate cPanel hosting and DNS, enter the three Hostmate nameservers shown above, then save the changes.

Using another DNS provider?

If you use Cloudflare or another external DNS provider, enter the nameservers supplied by that provider instead of the Hostmate nameservers.

Domain Registered Elsewhere

Change nameservers at your current registrar.

If the domain is not registered with Hostmate, log in to the company where the domain is registered and find its nameserver or DNS delegation settings.

Replace the existing nameservers with:

  • ns1.hostmate-cloud.com
  • ns2.hostmate-cloud.com
  • ns3.hostmate-cloud.com

Save the change with the registrar. You do not need to transfer the domain registration to Hostmate just to use Hostmate hosting or DNS.

5

Check DNS Before Cutover

Make sure important DNS records exist in cPanel.

Changing nameservers does not copy the old DNS zone automatically. Once the new nameservers are active, DNS records from the previous provider are no longer authoritative.

Website Check the main domain and www records point to the correct Hostmate hosting service.
Email Check MX records and any required SPF, DKIM or other mail records before changing nameservers.
Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace Copy all required external email records into the Hostmate cPanel DNS zone before the nameserver change.
Other services Check TXT, CNAME, SRV and verification records used by external services.
Changing nameservers does not move website files or email.

The hosting account, website files, mailboxes and required DNS records must already be configured at the destination.

6

DNS Propagation

Allow time for the change to be seen everywhere.

Nameserver and DNS changes are cached by DNS resolvers around the internet. Many users will see the new DNS within a few hours, but some cached results can take up to 24–48 hours to expire.

During this period, different visitors can temporarily receive answers from different DNS caches.

Do not keep switching nameservers back and forth.

Repeated changes make troubleshooting harder because different networks may still be caching different delegations.

7

External DNS

You do not have to use Hostmate nameservers.

If you want to keep DNS with Cloudflare, another registrar or another DNS provider, leave the domain on those nameservers and update the individual DNS records there instead.

Only DNS records at the domain's currently authoritative nameservers affect live traffic.

Use Hostmate DNS Set the domain to ns1, ns2 and ns3.hostmate-cloud.com and manage the zone through cPanel.
Keep external DNS Leave the existing nameservers in place and point the required website and email records to Hostmate manually.

Need Help?

Not sure whether it is safe to change the nameservers?

If the domain has an existing website, email service or custom DNS records, contact Hostmate support before changing nameservers and we can help you check what needs to be preserved.

Hostmate domain registrations use registrar integration through WHMCS, which supports nameserver changes from the Client Area. Synergy Wholesale's registrar module supports nameserver and DNS management through WHMCS. View Synergy Wholesale's WHMCS module information.
